Overview

Experience one of Tasmania’s most enchanting wildlife encounters on an evening guided tour from Launceston to the Low Head Coastal Reserve. Traveling in comfort, you will arrive at the island's largest penguin rookery just as dusk falls. Stand along the shore and watch in awe as adorable Little Penguins (also known as Blue or Fairy Penguins) - the smallest and noisiest penguin species in the world—emerge from the pristine waters of Bass Strait, stand up, preen themselves, and waddle across the beach to their burrows. Your trip to Low Head will be driven by David personally, but at Low head you will be handed over to a 'penguin expert' who will control your experience with the penguins. David will provide lots of commentary on the way to Low Head, then of course the local experts will talk throughout the experience providing in depth information concerning the penguins, seamless service and an unforgettable evening with Tasmania’s native wildlife! Additional Information

  • Departure Schedule: Tour times vary seasonally depending on sunset times. Allow approximately 3 hours total for the experience including transport.
  • Wildlife Rules: Strictly NO flash photography is allowed, as bright light blinds and disorients the penguins.
  • Clothing Requirements: Nights on the coastal reserve get cold and windy; guests must wear warm layers and sturdy sports/walking shoes.
  • What to Bring: Very warm clothing and extra layers (jacket, beanie/hat, windbreaker), comfortable, closed-toe sports or walking shoes, camera (ensure flash is completely turned off).
  • The guided penguin viewing experience takes approximately 1 hour. Including round-trip transfers from Launceston, please allow approximately 3.5 hours for the total tour duration.

Plan B

Tasmanian coastal evenings can feature wind or rain, but penguins return to shore every night regardless of weather! - Wet Weather: Tours operate in rainy conditions, as rain does not impede the penguins. Guests will be advised to wear waterproof jackets and sturdy shoes. - Severe Weather Conditions: In the rare event of extreme, unsafe storm weather, tour times may be slightly adjusted or guests offered an alternative night or full refund.
