Departing from Auckland, you’ll travel south into the heart of the Waikato region to ride the pristine, off-road Te Awa River Ride. Starting with smooth, gentle paths from Ngaruawahia through to Hamilton, the route meanders beside the glass-like waters of the Waikato River, taking in picturesque bridges, native bush groves, and world-renowned stopovers like the famous Hamilton Gardens for lunch. Led by Gordon - drawing on his 40+ years of riding experience and deep local knowledge—this tour offers total flexibility and peace of mind. Choose your own riding distance on the day, ranging from an easy 15–25 km up to a full 60 km stretch taking you through Cambridge to Lake Karapiro or the Grassroots Trust Velodrome. With air-conditioned round-trip transport from Auckland, custom e-bike setup, home-baked goodies, and our dedicated support wagon nearby at strategic checkpoints, all you need to do is turn the pedals and take in the view. Itinerary

  • 08:00 AM – 08:30 AM: Auckland Pickup

    Hotel or central Auckland pickup in our comfortable air-conditioned passenger wagon equipped with a custom bike trailer.

  • 08:30 AM – 10:15 AM: Drive to Waikato Trailhead

    Relax as you travel through the picturesque countryside of the Waikato region to the starting point in Ngaruawahia.

  • 10:15 AM – 10:30 AM: E-Bike Setup & Safety Briefing

    Fit your customized e-bike and receive a quick safety orientation from Gordon and the team.

  • 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM: Riverside Ride to Pukete (12 km)

    Begin riding along the gentle paved river paths following the Waikato River to Pukete for a morning tea stop.

  • 11:45 AM – 01:00 PM: Pukete to Hamilton Gardens (15 km)

    Continue past boardwalks and suburban river paths directly into the historic Hamilton Gardens grounds.

  • 01:00 PM – 01:45 PM: Lunch Break at Hamilton Gardens

    Enjoy a picnic or café lunch beside the river and explore the iconic garden surrounds. (Optional 25 km finish point).

  • 02:00 PM – 03:45 PM: Afternoon Extension Options (15–35 km)

    Option A: Ride out through Cambridge to the Grassroots Trust Velodrome and Lake Karapiro. / Option B: Take a guided loop through south-eastern Hamilton, past Waikato University, preserved natural groves, and local cycle paths.

  • 03:45 PM – 06:00 PM: Pack-up & Return to Auckland

    Load up the bikes and relax on the drive back for drop-off at your Auckland hotel or pickup point.

End Point

Return drop-off to your Auckland hotel, airport, or original central pickup point.

Additional Information

  • Rider Suitability: Grade 1–2 flat terrain (paved paths, boardwalks, and smooth gravel). Suitable for beginners and riders aged 6 to 80.
  • What to Bring: Comfortable sneakers, weather-appropriate clothing, a light jacket/windbreaker, and sun protection.
  • Restrictions: Not wheelchair accessible. Not suitable for pregnant women or riders over 120 kg (264 lbs).
  • Minimum Participant Requirements: Please note that a minimum of 4 participants is required for this tour to run. If the minimum number is not met, Gordon will contact you as soon as possible to offer alternative dates or a full refund.
  • Information Required: Please provide the height of each rider when booking so we can ensure proper bike fitting.

Plan B

The Te Awa river pathway is mostly paved and well-sheltered, but in the event of heavy rain or river flooding: - Alternative Route: The ride will adapt to elevated, fully paved greenways around Hamilton city and suburban heritage loops, combining indoor stops at local heritage sites and sheltered garden pavilions. - Rescheduling / Cancellation: If severe weather renders riding unsafe, guests will be offered the choice to reschedule for an alternative date or receive a full refund under our 24-hour cancellation policy. - Minimum Group Size: This tour requires a minimum of 4 participants to run. If the minimum number is not met, we may need to cancel or reschedule the session, but we will always give you as much advance notice as possible.
