Overview

Leave Auckland behind on an exclusive private journey to the rugged West Coast, guided by expert local guide Louise. Designed around one of New Zealand’s most remarkable wildlife sites, this half-day experience brings you to Muriwai - home to one of the country’s few mainland gannet breeding colonies. Travelling in the comfort of a private Mercedes-Benz V-Class, you’ll explore a dramatic stretch of volcanic coastline shaped by the wild forces of the Tasman Sea. At Muriwai, Louise will guide you along clifftop platforms to observe thousands of Australasian gannets (tākapu) nesting, feeding, and soaring overhead just meters away. Complete with a stop at the Arataki Visitor Centre to discover the ancient rainforest, geology, and Māori history of the Waitākere Ranges, this unhurried tour offers plenty of time for photography, observation, and authentic local storytelling. Highlights: 🪶 See a Wild Gannet Colony: Observe thousands of nesting gannets (tākapu) up close from scenic clifftop platforms. 🏖️ Walk the Black Sand Coast: Experience the dramatic volcanic sands and crashing surf of Muriwai Beach. 🦅 Witness Wildlife in Action: Watch gannets courting, tending to chicks, and diving into the Tasman Sea. 🌿 Arataki Visitor Centre & Rainforest: Take in sweeping canopy views and explore native ecology and Māori heritage. 🗣️ Local Guidance with Louise: Enjoy an unhurried, personalized wildlife journey led by your local guide.

Itinerary

  • Arataki Visitor Centre – Waitākere Ranges

Begin your journey at the entranceway to the Waitākere Ranges. Walk onto the viewing decks for sweeping panoramas across native forest reservoirs out to the Tasman coast. Step through the iconic carved frame for photographs, explore displays detailing the region's geology, ecology, and mana whenua (local Māori) culture, and make use of the modern facilities before heading to the coast.

  • Muriwai Beach

Explore the iconic black-sand shore of Muriwai Beach. Feel the volcanic dark sand underfoot, take in the towering coastal cliffs, and watch the heavy ocean surf. This is a prime spot for taking photos of the raw, untouched western coastline.

  • Muriwai Gannet Colony (Clifftop Walkway)

Follow easy clifftop walkways leading directly above the breeding colony of thousands of Australasian gannets (tākapu). Watch adults landing, tending their nests, feeding chicks, and taking flight over the roaring sea below. Louise will share insights into their migratory patterns, nesting behaviors, and why this mainland site is so extraordinary.

  • Return Journey to Auckland

Relax in your private vehicle during the scenic return drive back through regional Auckland to your drop-off location.

End Point

Drop-off at your original meeting point or an agreed central Auckland location

Additional Information

  • What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, camera, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate clothing (windproof layers recommended for the clifftop platforms).
  • Child Safety Seats: Please notify us if you are traveling with children under 7 years of age so we can provide a suitable safety seat. We will need the exact age, height, and weight of each child under 7.
  • Prohibited Items & Activities: Drones and feeding animals are strictly forbidden to protect the nesting wildlife. Smoking, pets (assistance dogs allowed), alcohol, and drugs are also not permitted.

Plan B

The West Coast is wild and weather can change quickly. High winds or rain on the clifftops are part of the coastal environment, but if extreme weather makes the gannet viewing platforms unsafe or inaccessible, Louise will adjust the route to alternative sheltered coastal viewpoints, indoor cultural centers, or rainforest stops in the Waitākere Ranges. If severe weather requires the tour to be canceled entirely prior to departure, and you choose not to proceed with a modified itinerary, you will receive a full refund.
