Overview
📅 Available from October to April (optimal trekking season) Leave the crowds behind and go beyond the standard tourist trail on this immersive, small-group journey to the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington (1270m/4167ft). Led by David - a local scientist, expert guide, and former search-and-rescue volunteer - this 2-hour experience brings Tasmania’s wild landscapes into sharp focus. Your journey takes you from historic Hobart streets through lush cool-temperate forests. Then enjoy an easy 90-minute walk under the towering dolerite cliffs, colorful snow gums and sub-alpine flora. Then we drive on to reach the alpine summit (the Pinnacle) where the views are something else. Along the way, David flavors the drive with gripping, firsthand tales of pioneering hikers and firefighting stories, backed by his university-level knowledge of botany, geology, and hydrology. It’s more than a scenic drive and hike; it’s an engaging, deep dive and walk into the heart of Tasmania that will leave you with a profound connection to the island. Itinerary
Departure & Scenic Foothills Drive
We set out from central Hobart, taking a beautiful scenic drive through the city’s historic streets and the leafy mountain town of Fern Tree. As we wind upward through refreshing, tall forests, watch the urban landscape fade into pure wilderness.
The Springs Mid-Way Pause
We pause halfway up the mountain at The Springs. Here, we can gaze up at the spectacular cliffs and the towering summit waiting ahead. Grab a morning coffee or hot drink at the local Lost Freight Cafe before we head higher up the mountain.
The Organ Pipes Guided Track Walk
Crossing the tree line, we arrive at the Chalet - a historic stone hut perched 1,000 meters above sea level. From here, we begin a 90-minute walk along the easily graded Organ Pipes Track. You'll walk among towering dolerite cliffs, sweeping boulder fields, and vibrant, resilient snow gums. David will use his scientific background to explain the unique local botany and geology while sharing firsthand pioneer stories.
The Summit Pinnacle & Free Time
We ascend to the very top (1270m), where the panoramic views expand to reveal the rugged peaks of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. We will take a short walk together to the summit trig point to celebrate reaching the highest peak. Afterward, enjoy dedicated free time to explore the Hobart and Southwest Wilderness viewing platforms. Photograph the dramatic rock pillars and fragile alpine vegetation, and stand at the edge of a vast realm of natural beauty.
Scenic Return Journey
We begin our descent back down the mountain, paired with stories from David about intriguing colonial characters including the first tour guide and a notorious outlaw.
Return to Hobart
You are returned safely to the city center exactly where we started, leaving you perfectly positioned and with plenty of appetite to grab lunch in Hobart.
End Point
This activity ends back at the original meeting point.
Additional Information
- Wear warm layers (the summit and walking track can be significantly colder than the city), a waterproof jacket or poncho, and comfortable shoes suitable for walking.
- Bring a hat and sunscreen, a water bottle and your favourite snacks.
- Not wheelchair accessible.
- No heart problems or other serious medical conditions.
Plan B
In the occasional event of road closure due to ice or show in these warmer seasons, I have a group of easy but interesting hikes to complete on the middle and lower slopes of the Mountain.
