Itinerary

• Departure & Historic Hobart Drive

  We depart from central Hobart, taking a guided scenic drive through the city’s historic streets. Passing through South Hobart, we view the massive silhouette of Mount Wellington towering directly over us and pass the iconic Cascade Brewery building (dating back to 1824) to share one of its timeless local stories.

• Forest Ascent & The Springs

  Winding our way higher, the drive takes us through tall eucalyptus forests and the mountain town of Fern Tree, famous for its lush, cool-temperate gardens (which are occasionally blanketed in snow). As we pass mid-way up the mountain at The Springs, we catch a quick "trailer view" glimpse of Bruny Island in the distance—a tiny taste of the coastal beauty to come.

• The Chalet & Alpine Transition

  As the forest transitions, we pass the Chalet - a rustic, historic shelter hut built from native dolerite bluestone. Here, the landscape reveals a beautiful waterfall, vibrant flowering banksia trees, and resilient, colorful snow gums. David will draw on his university background in hydrology, botany, and geology to explain how life thrives in this harsh, unique environment.

• The Pinnacle Summit & Free Time

  All the way to the top, the wheels do the climbing while you do the viewing. We arrive at the 1270m summit, where the views expand to include the distant, rugged peaks of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. You’ll have 30 minutes of free time to walk the Hobart and Southwest Wilderness viewing platforms, marvel at the abrupt, rock pillars, and stand astonished before a boundless ocean of natural beauty.

• Mountain Descent to Hobart

  We begin our descent back down the mountain, treated to a closer look at the mountain's amazing plants. David wraps up the journey with final gripping stories of the mountain's early days, arriving safely back in the city center exactly two hours after departure.
