Overview

Experience Melbourne from a whole new perspective as you glide along the iconic Yarra River aboard a beautifully restored vintage vessel. Built in 1924, the historic MV Grower - or her Art Deco-style sister launch MV Eureka - offers a calm, intimate, and elegant way to take in the city's top landmarks. Travel under historic low bridges, spot iconic sights from the Botanical Gardens to the MCG Stadium, and enjoy a relaxed, small-group atmosphere. A Personal Touch from Your Captain: In most circumstances, owner-operator Hamish drives and leads the cruise himself! Drawing on a rich family heritage in Australian maritime history, Hamish provides live, engaging commentary on Melbourne’s culture, history, and waterways. Authentic Heritage: Cruise on MV Grower (1924), the oldest vessel operating on Melbourne's upper waterways, or the elegant 1930s-inspired MV Eureka. 🧑‍✈️ Captain Hamish at the Helm: Enjoy expert, personal live commentary directly from owner-operator Hamish Turner on most departures. 📸 Panoramic Sights: Capture photo-worthy views of the MCG, South Wharf, Royal Botanic Gardens, Crown Casino, and Polly Woodside. 👥 Intimate & Uncrowded: Capped at a small maximum capacity to ensure comfort, plenty of seating, and personal service.

Itinerary

  • Part 1: Upstream & Iconic Landmarks Cruise (30 Minutes)

Cast off from Southgate after a quick safety briefing and head upstream into Melbourne's lush green belt. Pass historic rowing sheds, Birrarung Marr parklands, and Federation Square. Glide by Melbourne's famous sports precinct, including Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Travel under historic bridges (like Swan Street Bridge) past the Royal Botanic Gardens and the grand mansions of South Yarra/Toorak before turning around.

  • Part 2: Downstream & City Skyline Cruise (30 Minutes)

Head back past Southgate and travel downstream under three uniquely low bridges (Queen, King, and Spencer Street Bridges). View the historic landing point of European settlers, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, and Crown Casino. Pass the historic South Wharf precinct, home to bustling riverfront bars, restaurants, and the historic 1885 tall ship Polly Woodside. Cruise into the modern Docklands precinct for expansive views stretching down toward the Port of Melbourne and large shipping channels, before making the smooth return trip to Southgate.

End Point

Returns to the original meeting point (Berth 3, Southbank).

We had the absolute best afternoon on the Yarra with Captain Hamish and our favorite fellow tour crew member, Woody the dog! The cruise was smooth and scenic, with great commentary on Melbourne’s landmarks. Woody truly felt like part of our crew for the afternoon. It was the perfect finale to our Melbourne trip, and we can’t wait to come back and visit again. Thank you, Captain Hamish and Woody! 5/5 stars!
