Overview
Explore Auckland’s extraordinary volcanic landscape on an exclusive private guided tour led by local guide Louise. Built across an active field of more than 50 volcanoes, Auckland offers a rare opportunity to experience dramatic geological history woven directly into a modern urban environment. Travelling in a luxury Mercedes-Benz V-Class, you’ll visit key volcanic cones, deep craters, and sweeping lookout points across the city and harbours at your own relaxed pace. Louise brings the landscape to life by weaving together geology, history, and Māori heritage. You'll learn how these unique monogenetic volcanoes formed, why each erupted only once, and how ancient Māori lived with and fortified these powerful landforms (pā). Complete with a complimentary taste of local kawakawa tea and New Zealand honey, this immersive tour reveals the true fiery forces that continue to define the City of Sails. Highlights: 🌋 Maungawhau / Mount Eden: Stand atop Auckland's highest natural point for 360° views across a 50-meter-deep volcanic crater. 🌳 Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill: Explore twin craters, terraced Māori pā sites, and sweeping vistas over Cornwall Park. ⛰️ Māngere Mountain / Te Pane-o-Mataoho: Discover one of the region's best-preserved volcanoes overlooking the Manukau Harbour. 🌊 Rangitoto Views from Bastion Point: Take in panoramic coastal views of Auckland's youngest, most iconic island volcano. 🍵 Authentic Local Refreshment: Enjoy complimentary local kawakawa tea and New Zealand honey along the journey.

Itinerary
Bastion Point
Begin at this coastal headland overlooking Waitematā Harbour. Look out across the water to Rangitoto Island, Browns Island, and the wider volcanic field laid out before you - the perfect introduction to Auckland’s geological origins.
Māngere Mountain / Te Pane-o-Mataoho
Visit one of the best-preserved volcanic cones in the Auckland region, featuring two distinct craters and earthwork terraces from ancient Māori fortified villages (pā). A short walk offers sweeping views across Manukau Harbour as Louise explains early Māori settlement patterns.
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill
Explore one of Auckland’s most culturally and geologically significant sites. Walk around the twin craters and terraced slopes while taking in panoramic views across the city’s southern and central belts.
Maungawhau / Mount Eden
Conclude at Auckland’s highest natural point. Walk along the summit boardwalks encircling a perfectly preserved, 50-meter-deep volcanic crater for 360-degree views that connect all the volcanic peaks visited throughout the tour.
Return Journey to Central Auckland
Relax in your air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz V-Class on a short return drive back to central Auckland.
End Point
Drop-off at your original meeting point or an agreed central Auckland location
Additional Information
- What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, camera, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate clothing (layers recommended for wind exposure on summits).
- Child Safety Seats: Please notify us if you are traveling with children under 7 years of age so we can provide a suitable safety seat. We will need the exact age, height, and weight of each child under 7.

Plan B
Auckland's elevated volcanic peaks can experience swift wind and rain changes. If severe weather makes walking on exposed summit boardwalks unsafe, Louise will substitute exposed walks with sheltered, lower-level viewpoints, drive-by crater highlights, and indoor cultural exhibits detailing Auckland's volcanic history. If severe weather requires the tour to be canceled entirely prior to departure, and you choose not to proceed with a modified schedule, you will receive a full refund.
