Overview
Discover one of Auckland’s most fascinating and lesser-known areas on this guided afternoon tour through the northern coastal suburbs of Takapuna and historic Devonport. Crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge, you'll visit Lake Pupuke - a striking freshwater lake inside a ancient volcanic explosion crater - before exploring an ancient lava flow with rare fossilized tree molds along the Takapuna coastline. Take time to relax with an ice cream or coffee on Takapuna Beach before heading to North Head (Maungauika) to explore historic military tunnels and gun emplacements built directly into an extinct volcano. Finishing up at a secret lookout point, you can choose to be driven back to your central Auckland hotel or take the scenic Devonport ferry back to Queens Wharf at your own pace (ferry ticket included). We are a small, passionate local team dedicated to personal, friendly, and conversational travel. Your tour will be hosted by Mike, Harriet, Jerome, or one of our small team of expert guides - all ready to share their deep local knowledge of native plants and geology, plus Māori and European history, and answer any question you may have! Tour Highlights: 🌋 Lake Pupuke Crater: Visit a unique volcanic explosion crater lake and learn its history. 🌊 Lava coastline: Explore the rocky eastern coastline to view ancient lava tree molds and enjoy Takapuna Beach. 🛡️ North Head Military Fortress: Explore hidden tunnels, military gun emplacements, and enjoy sweeping views of the harbour and city. ⛴️ Flex Finish & Ferry Included: Return via van drop-off or take the short but scenic Devonport ferry back to the city, allowing you to stay a bit longer in Devonport for a drink or dinner (ferry ticket included).
