Led by David - a seasoned local guide trained in natural sciences at the University of Tasmania - this tour blends breathtaking vistas with expert commentary. From the historic, manicured grounds of the Cascade Gardens at the base to the dramatic, alpine rock pillars at the 1270m peak, David brings the landscape to life with captivating stories and scientific insights. It’s the perfect, relaxed afternoon escape that gets you back to the waterfront just in time for dinner.

Itinerary
Departure & Historic Cascade Valley
We set out from central Hobart on a guided scenic drive through the city's historic streets. We begin our exploration at the base of the mountain with a stroll through the classic Cascade Gardens, home to one of Australia’s finest collections of rhododendrons. From the lawns, we view the majestic Cascade Brewery building (dating back to 1824) before taking a brief guided walk past the historic convict Female Factory and the tranquil Hobart Rivulet - a peaceful waterway flowing straight from the mountain that is home to local platypuses.
Forest Drive & The Springs History
We wind upward through lush eucalyptus forests and the mountain town of Fern Tree, admiring the unique cool-climate front gardens. Arriving at The Springs halfway up the mountain, we pause to gaze up at the spectacular cliffs towering above. Here, you can purchase refreshments at the Lost Freight Cafe and join David to explore a spectacular mid-mountain lookout. We also learn about a colorful global pioneer of weather forecasting and the historic Springs Hotel site (famously known as "the pub with no beer").
The Chalet & Alpine Sub-Ecosystems
Our drive continues past the tree line to The Chalet, a unique rustic shelter hut built from native dolerite bluestone. This stop offers gorgeous views of Hobart, a mountain waterfall, and an up-close look at colourful, resilient snow gums and flowering banksia trees. David uses his university background in botany, hydrology, and geology to explain how these unique plants survive the mountain's harsh climate.
The Summit Pinnacle & Free Time
The wheels do the final climbing while you enjoy the views as we ascend above the tree line to the 1270m summit. Up here, the panoramas expand to reveal the rugged peaks of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Enjoy dedicated free time to walk the Hobart and Southwest Wilderness viewing platforms, observe the unique alpine vegetation, marvel at the abrupt rock pillar formations, and stand astonished at the edge of an endless ocean of natural beauty.
Scenic Mountain Descent
We begin our journey back down, while David shares final gripping mountain stories of the eccentric first tour guide and a notorious colonial outlaw nick named Rocky Wheelin.
Return to Hobart
We arrive safely back at 20 Davey Street, placing you back in the heart of the city with plenty of time to enjoy dinner at Hobart's nearby waterfront restaurants.

Additional Information
- Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for short, flat boardwalk and garden strolls.
- Bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket or umbrella, a water bottle and quick snacks if desired, a hat and sunscreen.
Plan B
In the unlikely event of snow or ice closing the road to the Pinnacle in the warmer seasons I take my guests to all our favorite sites on the lower and middle level of the mountain. I also have other interesting places to take you including the historic waterworks reserve dating back to 1860.
